I’m going to KARA’s first concert in Singapore! Can’t be more excited when I received the great news that there’s an opportunity to check them out with free exclusive invites! Although I’m not the biggest fan of girl groups, I’ve always been pretty awed at the kind of “perfect” image and physical appearance they tend to portray, razor-precision and coordination of dance moves, flawless makeup and features, beautiful outfits and oh-so-feminine demeanor that oozes out from every lyric spouted. Geez. How are they really like in person? Is it real talent or just pretty (cosmetically crafted) faces? I was going to find out
From the butt-shakin’ hit “Mister” to the psychedelic tunes of “Step“, Korean girl group KARA has come a long way to attain their global standing in K-Pop-dom today. One of the most successful Korean imports to Japan, the five-member group (Park Gyuri, Han Seungyeong, Nicole Jung, Goo Hara and Kang Jiyoung) catapulted to instant stardom with their hip-swaying dance moves and mild-mannered ways.
While they have chalked up numerous chart-topping Oricon hits and No.1 bestsellers, before they became a household name in Japan, the group had more lows than highs in the course of their idol careers. They had a lacklustre debut, underwent a reformation with two new members — when ex-lead singer Kim Sunghee left the group — and got embroiled in a legal lawsuit over contractual dispute, which was eventually amicably resolved out of court in 2011.
The group eventually made their debut in Japan in 2010. By the end of that year, Kara was dubbed as Japan’s #1 Rookie Artist of 2010 by Oricon and also received the New Artist Of The Year Award (International) from the Japan Gold Disc Awards. In April 2011, the group achieved their first #1 single with “Jet Coaster Love”, making them the first foreign female group since the creation of the Oricon (43 years ago) to rank #1 in the 1st week of release and the first foreign female group in 30 years to rank #1 in the charts all together. They also hold the title as the first Korean girl group to top the Oricon Weekly Single Chart.
