Paperman (2012)

written by Walt Disney Animation Studios

An animated short that follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him.

Enjoy and Happy Valentine’s Day!

How to land Your First Magazine Cover!

With America’s Next Top Model and its many successor versions (by country, of course) and now the latest in the #TopModel series being Asia’s Next Top Model, it’s just the right time to reveal how you may just land your first magazine cover! It may not be Harper’s Bazaar, or Vogue, then again you may not even need to try as hard as the girls in the branded series and experience all that drama.

Unless you want to.

http://meljanein10seconds.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/july2010russianellecoverphototonykimmodelvalentinazelyaeva.jpg?w=234

I was just reading a couple of articles, and got inspired to write this post:

[Adapted from ModelMayhem's edu Library]

The two basic methods

The first option is to shoot with photographers who regularly get published. Go to a newsstand and pick up the magazine you want to be in. Flip through the pages and see who the photographers are. Next, contact the photographer and set up a shoot with the intention of having your images submitted to that magazine. The photographer may get pre-approval from the magazine to shoot you for a feature, or the photographer may shoot you on “spec.” Shooting on spec means the photographer does the shoot without pre-approval and submits to the magazine anyway, in hopes that they use the images.

http://img.ezinemark.com/imagemanager2/files/30003693/2011/05/2011-05-08-08-13-11-7-model-julia-stegner-on-vogue-germany-may-2011-cove.jpeg

The second option is to take matters into your own hands. Find the best photographer in your area, shoot the style of pictures you see in the magazines you want to be in, and submit them yourself. Go to the inside few pages of most magazines and look for the email or mailing addresses of the Editor and Chief or Art Director. You can also go to the magazine’s website and usually find the contact information there. Once you have the contact info, start introducing yourself and submitting your photos. You may even consider actual prints via FEDEX to art directors. Everyone opens an overnight FEDEX package, right?

Don’t be afraid of “NO”

For every magazine cover you land, there were sometimes up to 6 other magazines that passed on the same image. Perhaps you were to submit a web size sample of your image to several magazines at the same time. Some editors would say no, others would say it’s not the right look, and still others wouldn’t respond at all. However, eventually you might just get a YES! An image could be sat on for a whole year before it was picked up for a cover. You just have to believe in yourself and your works.

As a model, you have to evaluate your goals. Do you want to make small amounts of money from beginner photographers paying you? Or do you have a bigger vision? Would you rather shoot with the best photographers, submit to magazines, and make a name for yourself? That’s where you have an increased chance of getting sponsors, contracts, and/or endorsements. Enlarge your vision.

http://www.howmuchdotheyweigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Tyra-Banks.jpg

You could get to the point where you wouldn’t shoot with a photographer who wasn’t up to your standards, no matter how much they paid you. To the contrary, you would seek out the best photographers and pay them instead. Get the works? You just want the results, the best photographs. Sometimes the process of getting there wouldn’t matter. Would it? As Tyra said “We don’t like mean girls.” So bear that in mind.

http://www.la-advertising-photographer.com/fashionphotographyblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/best-fashion-photographer-new-york.jpg

Why PAY for the BEST photographers?

  • Ability to pick which images are retouched
  • Being provided with both high resolution and web size images. High resolution images are necessary for publication
  • Ability to choose the looks/outfits/locations that you want and feel are the best
  • Freedom to submit the images on your own to publications

Always discuss your plans for the images with the photographer before the shoot. Make sure the photographer is ok with you submitting to magazines on your own. Usually the photographers would be happy to have you submit to magazines because it was promotion and marketing for them.

Always discuss with the photographer ahead of time the shoot details, such as high resolution images, and any other questions you might have.

http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lftacnqMcm1qdok1go1_500.jpg

Why not shoot with just anyone? Despite being Paid!

You have to protect your image at all costs. Look through the photographer’s portfolio and find their worst image. You could be their next worst image. You have to ask yourself, does the $200 you made from the shoot justify having bad pictures of yourself circulating around the internet forever?

Other disadvantages of doing TFCD shoots and some paid shoots:

  • Photographer typically decides which images are retouched
  • Typically only web size images are given
  • Photographer usually shoots what he/she wants, which may not necessarily be exactly what you had in mind
  • Often you will have to sign a release that does not allow you to submit your images to magazines

As Robert Greene stated in his famous book, The 48 Laws of Power, “Despise the Free Lunch. What is offered for free is dangerous – it usually involves either a trick or a hidden obligation. What has worth is worth paying for. By paying your own way you stay clear of gratitude, guilt, and deceit. It is also often wise to pay the full price – there is no cutting corners with excellence.”

How do you find the right photographer so you have images to submit to magazines?  The simple answer is, you have to find a photographer who gives you a finished product good enough to go directly on a magazine cover. These photographers are few and far between.

But don’t give up and you’ll get there! Find your niche and work towards that, and focus.

God bless and all the best! <3

Beauty Obsessions.

What is it like to be a girl who is surrounded by other beautiful girls? A world plunged into the realms of beauty, cosmetics, fashion and beauty photography and an obsession with outstanding physical appearances…

I’m beauty obsessed but it doesn’t mean I’m shallow.

Every time I’m hurt I just wanna be better than who I already am, and there’s no stopping this desire.

Sometimes I ask myself if I’m going to make it in the financial industry, when my utmost and first love is fashion – just browsing some cosmetics products/apparels/shoes/accessories or looking at beautiful things makes me relaxed and happy~

We give you the keys to prepare the most chic travel suitcase. Don’t forget a pair of Bermuda shorts and the ethnic accessories to spend a stylish weekend.

Don’tcha just love Mango’s new collection??

Always a fan of Estee Lauder, I’m also loving their skincare essentials. Currently using the hydration and lifting range~

MAKE IT A BOMBSHELL SUMMER!

As for fragrances, I’m still a true to VS’s very sexy smells that are so full of vitality and feminity.

Loving my life, my job, and my healthier, toner and fitter body thanks to consistent gyming and diet with Linda dear ;) yes gonna set my target for the rest of the year right now!

Look out for my next post on Ginvera products <3

What has passed but never forgotten: Fashion and Beauty in 2009!

D&G

As promised, here’s my edition of what has taken the world by storm in Fashion and Beauty this year. Bringing you the best of 2009 -

Best Dressed Celebrities: Rihanna & Sienna Miller

irminak.pinger.pl

Rihanna pushes the best of today’s trends. Going all the way with arched shoulders, engineered dresses, full-body bandage suit and more, RiRi’s love for the edgy look gets our utmost respect. Also in this category are Sienna Miller, one of English’s best export, and best remembered for her 24/7 trendy styles and never-go-wrong ensembles that characterize her fashion sense.

Best Fashion Collaboration: Christopher Kane for Topshop & Jimmy Choo for H&M

club.femm.ca

I love 2009 for these fash-collabos! From the runway and to store racks, such collaborations allow commonfolk like us to own these designer products at an affordable price. Although deemed as OTT to most of the general public, many are digging this iconic alligator top which sprung forth from his original animal print t-shirt collections. Also, In my previous post I’ve shown you how awesome the designs were for Jimmy Choo’s (H&M). I’m delighted to once again present to you these beauties.

Best New Fashion Icon: Michelle Obama & Lady Gaga

gyma.files.wordpress.com/

stylebakery.com

Remember how the First Lady‘s pictures were splashed all over fashion magazines for her designer outfits that were simple yet oh-s0-elegant? She was notably remembered for her Jason Wu cream gown. The days of boring politicians (on and off stage) are long gone. Lady Gaga‘s outrageous outfits and “crazy” MTVs are particularly jawdropping, too. We can all see why and how, I’m sure.

Best Fashion Trend: Sequins and Strong/Structured Shoulders

fashionhype.co.uk

whowhatwear.com

We love sparkles so much, we’re willing to be a Twilight vampire anytime! Our new year’s resolution? To liberate sequins so we can wear it all year round without looking like a desperate, delusional disco freak. From sequin jackets to body-con dresses, this is one trend that will definitely keep you in the views of photographers around. Sculptured shoulders are so hot this year, especially in FW09, every sort of style tried to incorporate it. It’s so cool isn’t it? However, I totally do not buy overly huge shoulders…I mean, who wants to look like some Dutch maid?!

Best Beauty Trend: Bandage Shoes and Puple/Gold Eyeshadow

forsapink-mix.blogspot.com

2.bp.blogspot.com

Strong and strappy sends all the right messages for spring and goes so well with almost everything. Another fashion trend that is the sibling of bandage shoes are of course the bodycon dresses. And they sometimes totally go together. As for purple and gold eyeshadow, they’re so versatile and sexy that putting them together will just make you look Boomz! Ok Ok I shall stop using Ristionary.

Best Beauty Product: Estee Lauder’s/Lancome’s Vibrating Mascara and Toni & Guy’s Refreshing Dry Shampoo

Estee Lauder

Lancome

Toni and Guy

In July, Estée Lauder launched TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue. The vibration of this battery-operated brush promises to separate lashes to avoid clumping. And from what I’ve heard, it REALLY WORKS and lots of women around the world have been amazed at this wonderful tool.

Lancôme’s version, Ôscillation, was out in Fall. The brush vibrates 7,000 times per minute, claiming to provide 360-degree coverage around each lash. It was created by Jean-Louis Guéret, who has developed almost 400 (!) mascaras in his lifetime. As expected,  Ôscillation gives Estee Lauder a run for its money!

Toni and Guy‘s Refreshing Dry Shampoo are for lazy people who do not or cannot wash their hair in the shower – yet it takes the oilyness and the shinyness away from your hair and leaves it with a nice smell and a nice easy to style look! How good is that!

Best Hair Style: The Pixie Crop and Flowy Long Hair

fashionising.com

fashionising.com

Victoria Beckham wore it, so did Katie Holmes, Natalie Portman and Agyness Deyn. It just speaks for itself – trendy, chic and style-setting. Short and cropped’s the way to go!

I personally love loooong hair because you can tie it, style it, dye it, keep it in any way you want – straight or permed. Most importantly, long hair goes well with any kind of trends and styles because it’s so versatile! Sexy’s the word.

Best Designer Label for Handbags: Louis Vuitton and Chanel

myddnetwork.com

thatsafabuloushandbag.com

thatsafabuloushandbag.com

LV used a lot of decorations to complement its handbags. For example: this handbag with bronze tones, big tassels and beads. Very popular on the runaway and a big hit in spring/summer 2009.

Chanel‘s handbags for Fall 2009 are so gorgeous that celebrities can’t stop being photographed carrying them! Oh how I wish I could own one of them too…

Best Statement Jewellery: Chandelier Earrings and Statement Necklaces

runwaydaily.com

anewmode.com

Chandelier earrings can brighten up and glamorize almost any kind of outfit or occasions – day or night. And as you know, when it comes to bling, the bigger and bolder the better!

Statement necklaces are known to be worthy investments any girl (or guy) should indulge in. Just look at how amazing and stylish you’d look with a beautiful statement neck-piece. So what are you waiting for? Choose something you really like, and colours that reflects well on your complexion, not wear it for the sake of knowing it’s HOT now. Good luck!

And the Finale…

Best Label: Balmain

credits to Fab Sugar Australia

media.onsugar.com

Yes I totally agree with the 2009 Sugar Award! It is definitely the most influential label this year! Balmain dominated the catwalks, red carpets, designer stores and inspired every chain store imaginable with their clever take on 80′s dressing mixed with a French rock slant. Designer Christopher Decarnin took the once-elegant eveningwear label (founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945) and resurrected it with thigh-high, tough-chic, sequin-filled, rock-star glory. A favourite amongst stars including Sienna Miller, who wore a glittery Spring 2010 number to her broadway debut this October; Beyonce, who’s been seen in multiple Balmain items including a multi-coloured mini dress for the BET Awards; Blake Lively, in a full sleeved Paillette mini dress for a post Emmys soiree; Kylie Minogue, who changed into multiple Balmain looks for her Brit Awards co-hosting duties; and most recently, model Daria Werbowy in the same frock as Sienna.

And the good news is that the Balmain hysteria is only set to continue, with Decarnin’s Spring 2010 collection offering liquid gold dresses and distressed military detailing on everything from skinny pants to jackets!

Bringing INNOVATIONS back!!!

I’m back!!! :)

From ASEANpreneurs Youth Leaders’ Exchange (AYLE 2009),  of course! What an exciting and fruitful one week in Jakarta, Indonesia, and one day in Bandung :) It’s so exhausting because of the packed schedule of seminars, site visits, travelling, shopping, group discussions and presentations etc etc etc, plus our flight was delayed 2 hours last night!! Just got back from Abigail’s 21st as well! Well, time passed so fast anyway but I must say I’m so glad I went for AYLE afterall because I felt that I’ve become a better person with more friends and networks, inspiration, motivation, ideas and future plans. In fact, I’ve found quite a few potential business partners whom I’d love to work with (working towards my fashion dream) and start a business/partnership/collaboration real soon! Do keep coming back to my blog for updates for I’m sure you guys will love the idea!!! ♥

It’s a 7 day entrepreneurial exchange programme but it’s really DAY 8 that counts: what we have achieved from this event and what we intend to do, where we plan to go towards that really reflects how meaningfully these 7 days were spent.

It’s about 2 weeks to my internship at Nuffnang (I can’t wait!) and I have really little time but this is what I’ve planned to do -

1. Revamp my blog, possibly into a dotcom

2. Build on/develop my business plan

3. Prepare for Nuffnang

4. Shopping for work clothing and Christmas!!!

5. Catching up with friends and loved ones

6. Short holiday to Bali (maybe, if I can spare the time)

7. Do my hair, manicure/pedicure

8. Christmas events (stay tuned!)

That’s all I can think of for now, which is quite enough already I believe! To end off this post, here’s something interesting for all fashionistas/fashion lovers out there!
